Ubuntu is probably the future of PC gaming

Here's something I've been thinking about. What do you think?

Apple

  • Locking down OSX.
    • No optical drive. The Mac software shelf at Fry's is now obsolete.
    • Mac App Store.
    • Gatekeeper only allows "signed" applications, by default.

[*]Miniaturization of computer hardware, at the cost of graphical performance.

[*]Move to non-upgradable hardware (glued-in memory).

[*]Moving away from file system access (iCloud).

[*]Hardware is expensive, and will always be a luxury item.

Windows

  • The people who made Windows 2000 and XP have retired. Microsoft does not appear to possess the same talents it once had.
  • Artificial upgrade requirements for DirectX are impeding development (tessellation works fine on Windows XP with OpenGL).
  • Attempting to lock down Windows like iOS.
  • Intel attempting to absorb entire PC (socketless CPUs).
  • Moving away from file system access.
  • MS failures tend to encourage them, so I expect the trend to continue:
    • Office ribbon sucked, so they added it to everything.
    • Zune interface sucked, so they used it for everything.

Ubuntu

  • Valve and THQ coming to Ubuntu.
  • Less fragmented than Windows.
    • One UI (GTK).
      • vs. MFC, WPF, .NET, and Modern UI.

[*]GUI applications can be developed with one language (C++) instead of C#/Objective-C.

      [*]One environment.

      • vs. Legacy/Modern division.

      [*]One version (12.10).

      • vs. XP, Vista, 7, 8, and Blue.

    [*]Competition between Linux distros.

    • If Ubuntu really pisses developers off, they can easily switch to a competing one like Mint.
    • Can never be "locked down".

    [*]Fastest performance.

[*]Still sucks, but getting better while Windows and Mac get worse.

Maybe in five years, computing will look like this:

  • Office workers will use Windows.
  • Gamers wil use Linux.
  • The general population will use a cheap tablet for Email and web browsing.

What do you think?

I think being able to run the Leadwerks 3 editor itself on Linux would be a good idea in the future. I'm extremely wary of where Windows and OSX are going.

That may sound exaggeratory, but desktop application development has already been stagnant for years. All the programmers I meet in real life are either doing web or mobile development.

When was the last time you heard of a startup company that was making a GUI application for Windows? I can't remember any since the early 2000s.

I hate osx but at least it has a real terminal and you can get binaries for it. Microsofts failure to ship a package manager for their pos toolchain is unforgivable. I would love to program in leadwerks in linux. Everything just works in a *nix operating system because its automatable and conventional. I am so sick of windows and their total disregard to talented developers. I am linked this before but it is simple truth.

It is also worth noting that open source will simply devour everything in time where it makes sense.

You may be right. It may just be the best thing for the industry. I wouldn't ever have problems again going to a LAN and no one can play a game because they can't use DX10 on XP.

I think it will take a bit of time but Heck if that is where the games are then that is where I will go...

I used XP 32 as long I could, but then my PC broke and I had to buy a new one which had 16GB RAM. So I had to switch to Win 7 64 to use all RAM. I think in 5 years I will be still using Win 7 64. Never really needed DX10/11, but it's a nice bonus to have.

Looking forward to a LE3 development SDK for Linux/Ubuntu.

How cool wouldn't that bee... I have the same considerations as you have Josh, Windows going wrong direction, Apple already has....

With a LE3 for Linux I would indeed consider to switch over as my main 3D Modeling software 3DCoat already run well on Linux.

Well not all gamers are intelligent enough to install their own operating system. Gamers usually just want to play their games - they seem to have a "this is my computer make your game work on it" mentality.

Linux may be a better platform but how to the gamers see it?

I never considered Mono for the editor because I don't view it as future-proof, especially since Xamarin is a VC-funded company (extreme volatility). One day I will carry out my idea for a BASIC language that translates code to C++ during the compiling process.

I'm talking about PC gaming, not gaming in general. I think general gamers will be on mobile with some streaming mechanism, or a cheap ARM-based console like Ouya.

Didn't Metatron already beat you to this?

Let's see who's will be better, competition is always good :)

Monkey has also a similar approach, but it's not enough C++ specific for my needs and it has garbage (collection).
