Character Sketches

The first step to building a character model is to establish the concept. Here are the images I have received. I have my favorite in mind, but what do you think? The purpose of this character is to serve as an enemy for a wide range of games. It could also be used as a main character with a third-person camera.

Which one do you like best?

Hmm ok, definitely not the helmet guys. I think the balaclava guys will probably be the most flexible so if I had to pick a set I'd pick set 3, cos the hat guy would be kinda cool too, although the balaclava guy in set 2 looks good too.

If it's an enemy then right #2 I think is the most enemy like given the classic bad guy mask. The others actually look more like good guys. For a good guy left #3 is ideal I think.

I think don't have any helmets, headphones or tech or their heads or anything that looks like it ties them to a particular military or role. Probably the more mercenary they look the better.

3 with hat is the best.

If the artist can make hat, helmet , short hair or long hair as separate items it would be the best as people will be able to change them in the prefab to make variations in no time.

Also two or three textures sets for clothes like camo and uniform color cloth fabric, why not for the head a separate material with two or three different textures at choice, this would be even better.

Easy fast customisation is the key for assets. It is just some personnal opinion only.

I had the choice between doing that initially or just directly making the model. A customizable model is more expensive, but saves money after you start having a lot more characters made. I chose to just make the one model we want, until I see how well these guys perform. If I am happy I will commit to a more customizable character after that, and use that as our template.

Perhaps you can ask cleverly a guy with no mask and no hair and no accessories on the head.

The community can make some hats , helmets or hair , sun googles , radio headphones etc ... for the soldier , it should not be super complicated i think. It is just small modding like Team Fortress 2 items..

If you provide source materials : FBX and Tga textures, people will be able to change the outfits colors in a painting program or add patterns using masks or draw damage to turn them in soldier zombies.

This small and easy customisation can be made by the community in some workshop.

The masked ones and the one with the hat (big or not lol) are my favorites. But, perhaps make 'em look less 'militairy', and more hostile. ;-)

Other than that, nice concepts!

I've responded to go ahead with the masked version of #3, but to remove the headset. The hat is something I will keep in mind for the future.
