Everything in its place

I've been working a lot on the business side of Leadwerks lately, and although the results aren't yet visible, it's important to ensure our long-term goals are achieved. I wish I could say more right now. :rolleyes:

My main machine is back on Windows XP. I don't want to discuss the relative merits of operating systems, but for me Windows XP is more productive. Other people might not work the way I do, so they will have their own preferences, and no one is "wrong". That said, I am surprised with how simple everything feels. Instead of "experiencing" someone else's idea of what a computer should be like, I feel like I have things back under my control. I looked up a lot of registry tweaks, and am tuning XP to work just the way I want. Here are some of the modifications I made:

  • Modified Explorer search to include all file types.
  • "Computer" now opens with file tree on the left.
  • Shortcuts don't display an arrow.
  • Modified places bar shown on the left with file request dialogs.
  • Disabled Autoplay on all drives.
  • Disabled logon screen.

Yeah, I know it is funny that a programmer is talking about Windows XP like it's 2001, but I like it. :rolleyes:

TweakUI is a neat little application I found handy that you might like, and it's offered on Microsoft's website, so it might be a little more reliable than some others.

Another good aspect of my setup on XP is security. I love Sygate Personal Firewall. It prompts the user for every single connection that is attempted, and gives you the option to allow, deny, and save your setting to use again later. There's probably other Firewalls for Windows 7 that work just as well, but none of the ones I tried were as intuitive.

I'm surprised with how few program I actually need. It's also interesting to see how they have changed over the years. Here's a partial list of installed apps:

  • Firefox
  • Digsby (I had a brief quarrel with this program, but I love it.)
  • SmartFTP (inexpensive and fantastic)
  • OpenOffice
  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • BlitzMax
  • BLIde Plus
  • XNView
  • Media Player Classic (I like Media Player 12 a bit, but it's not available for XP, and I always keep this installed anyway)
  • WinAmp 2.95 with Blackdawn skin.
  • Paint.NET
  • Sygate Personal Firewall
  • Avast Antivirus
  • CDBurnerXP (very good free program!)
  • Steam (of course)
  • WinRar
  • TGA thumbnail viewer
  • DDS thumbnail viewer
  • Windows Texture Viewer
  • Adobe Reader

So I have everything the way I want, in my own little obsessive-compulsive method of organizing my computer. I think today will shape up to be a very productive day, programming-wise. :D

What common programs do you find useful? How have these changed over the years? Now that I have Digsby, I don't need Windows Messenger. I'm attempting to replace Microsoft Office with OpenOffice.org. What about you?

I used to used to use Trillian which is like Digsby.

Some of the more interesting apps I have on my XP desktop:

  • XML Notepad 2007
  • Notepad ++ (its just fast and flexible)
  • FileZilla FTP Client, free and feature rich
  • UMLet for quick diagrams
  • 7-Zip handles 7z, rar etc.

Otherwise my Programs menu is close to yours.

I haven't used MS Office in years. OpenOffice has been good to me.

I wish is was not so difficult to locate funding here in the UK. It's like pulling teeth, the avenues are not obvious, even European grants are available. The UK now offers tax breaks to game developers.

I love Ubuntu still. The fact that I could set it up exactly the way I wanted was an attractive feature. I also find it very easy to fix problems by googling. Open source has come a long way as far as support is concerned.

I'm not intelligent enough to handle Ubuntu. The programs that I must have are Blender, Renoise, 3dCoat, Leadwerks SDK, Paint.NET, and 3dCoat and REALPLAYER!!!!!!! Realplayer lets you download music and movies off of almost any site like youtube - it doesn't work with Hulu though.

And also some web browser probably Google Chrome

Oh I see a few newbie mistakes there:

Firefox -> Seamonkey

WinAMP -> Foobar

Avast -> ClamWin

Adobe -> Foxit

Ubuntu -> Debian

But yeah, no point to argue, one day you will find that my choices are the only right ones (I have studied all of their aspects from their deepest grounds on, nobody else does that) :)

Basically the same with a few added:

UU3D

Hex Editor Neo

Skype

CrazyBump

Firefox is getting annoying though. If I leave it open for more than 3 days it starts eating up a ton of memory ><

I use Vista only because I don't have access to a copy of XP and I don't want to invest too much time installing everything again. Once our office is up and running with more programmers, I'm sure the consensus will be XP.

I happen to love XP. I just use my laptop for most everything not related to Leadwerks and Ubuntu was free.

Everyone has their opinions on what they like and dislike. Telling others which OS they should use only incites arguments. I prefer to just let each person do their own thing because you will never be able to please the whole crowd.

I do however encourage the use of OpenOffice.org. Many of our friends in the industry use it.

So you have steam installed, But do you also have games installed?

- VLC Player

- Chrome

- UltraFXP (which unfortunately doesn't run on 7)

- Snagit

Another vote here for Foxit reader instead of Adobe's. Does the same job with great performance and it's a lot less intrussive (just watch out not to install the ask.com stuff in the process). :D

and yup, I also love XP.

Thanks for the Filezilla tip. This uses a classic XP interface and is nice and simple. I'm trying to migrate to free software so I know how to use it in case I have to get a lot more machines.

When I install an OS (in order):

  • Chrome
  • Live Messenger
  • Notepad++
  • Visual C#
  • MySQL
  • FileZilla
  • TuneUp (recommended)
  • iTunes
  • MapleStory (yes, I know.)

9 programs for me.

  • Firefox
  • Notepad++
  • 7zip
  • Putty (for communication through shell)
  • FileZilla
  • Foobar2k
  • KMPlayer

These are the absolute minimum requirements on any computer I work on :lol:
