    @SpiderPigDo you have the Vulkan SDK from LunarG  installed? What version?

    Ah I only had the 1.2 SDK installed.  1.3 fixed the validation issue.  But now I'm getting this error in debug mode... does the screenshot give enough info?  Release works fine still.

    If you have the manual install option enabled, the application does not run the bat files at all, so nothing will be installed until you run them yourself. Otherwise the application runs these automatically after the download is complete.

    The last times I've installed I've not had manual install enabled.  I tried it once to see if it worked and it did, but since then I've let it do things automatically to find the problem.  It is installing folders and files to the client directory such as Tools, Templates and Plugin SDK.  It is only making a folder called Library but it has no contents.  It doesn't make a folder called Include.

    Going to ProgramData\\UltraEngine and running patch.bat after the auto install fixes all that though.  Perhaps the scripts are running before things are downloaded all the way?  I notice the command prompt pop up quickly a few times during the download.

  2. Updated the app and did a clean install.  No error messages in the download process, still no contents in the library folder and its the same with the include folder which is not there at all.  Running the patch.bat manually still fixes both those issues.  Updated my graphics driver and still have the Vulkan error in debug mode.  Looked up Vulkan info on my pc and it says I have v1.3.

    Downloaded client9. Installed fine manually, automatically however still had missing files in the Library folder in the client app directory.  No errors in manually or automatic install.  Perhaps now that tar.exe and it's two dll's are gone its working ok?  Running patch.bat as admin after an auto install put the .lib files into the Library folder.

    Both debug and release build fine even though both show these errors.  The errors are across a few files.

    Release runs fine but debug still has the error;

    Do I need to update Vulkan or something?  How can I see what version I have installed?

    Importing a project created with client8 works well.  I get a small error icon which I assumed means some files aren't up to date.  Didn't know what to do so I clicked the icon and guessed that I press OK which seemed to work.  Some more info displayed on this process would be a good idea.

    Upon opening the updated imported project it can't find UltraEngine.h.  Perhaps the paths aren't updating to the new client app directory?  Looking in the projects properties that seems to be the case.

  4. Just updated and all the contents of the Include directory were gone - not sure about other directories.  This could be because I deleted tar.exe and am using the older default for W10?  There were also two updates available, one right after the other.  After uninstalling then reinstalling there is no Include folder now. :huh:

  5. I got a new project running but am getting this very long error then crash a few seconds in.  I installed about 5 min ago...

    EDIT Only in Debug mode is seems.

  6. I just installed the SDK and had these errors pop up as it downloaded-  I just clicked okay and the process continued.

    Error.thumb.png.6a5f28a6d15e40b2e580842780c01a20.png

    Creating a new project worked nice and fast!  I created it on a separate drive though because C drive I like to keep free for my OS.  Loading up the project in VS and it can't find UltraEngine.h.  Is that due to the errors above or using another drive you think?

    When I updated Visual Studio to the latest, those errors now stop on your own code instead of inside weird header templates.

    https://gamedev.net/forums/topic/712870-fixing-confusing-c-shared-pointer-errors/

    I already had the latest, the example you gave in the link you provided worked okay but there's still other examples like this;

    shared_ptr<Model> test = CreateModel(Core->world);
    shared_ptr<void> user_data = test;
    shared_ptr<Model> v;

    v = dynamic_pointer_cast<Model>(user_data);

    This might be a very bad way to do what I want to do, I'm not sure.  But this gives 4 errors that take you to memory.h.  But now looking at the output there is one line that leads to the problem in your own code.  (static_pointer_cast works here instead though) There are other cases that still go to memory.h and other weird headers but I can't remember what they are...

  8. 33 minutes ago, Josh said:

    But if you switch over to "output" you will see the line in your code where the mistake actually is, two lines down from the highlighted line:

    Untitled2.thumb.jpg.2bd3c8083fea5e56cb3e98e07c23d694.jpg

    How have I not known I could double click in the output window as well as the error window... :o

    I am guessing this had something to do with shared pointers, like assigning an incompatible type to another?

    My two cents - using the old version you gave access to on steam - errors surrounding shared pointers are a headache to track down as they take you to headers like memory.h. etc... with no indication on where the actual problem you typed is...

    I also discovered that separate .lib files are no longer necessary for Newton, OpenAL, etc. They all get packed into the UltraEngine.lib file now in Visual Studio 2022. This is a big improvement!

    Does that make compiling faster?

    Have a release date in mind?  I'm ready to give you money.

  11. Are these objects parented to anything small that might have been culled when the camera moves a bit?  Like a pivot or something?  I've had that happen before but I can't remember if it were the early Ultra demos or not.  :P  Just thought I'd throw it in there to think about.

  12. I would like to see UAK remain as a standalone product primarily for the users who have already bought it.  I think once you buy a software your entitled to have all bugs fixed.  Couldn't you move it to your site and sell it there?  It would be a good one time buy product  - want 3D?  Rent UltraEngine. :)

  13. I also think Steam is great.   But if our games get buried because they don't make Valve enough money to start with it means we have to do our own marketing anyway.  Which means the sales you do get, Steam didn't earn they're 30%.  Yeah you could be paying to have an easy platform to upload your game too and it's something that players are familiar with - but I don't feel it's worth 30% just for that.  Maybe my new knowledge of the marketing process from helping my wife with Uni has given me an unjustified confidence with ditching steam.  :P

    Either way I'm curious to put the success of my game in my own hands and leave Steam out of the equation, at least to start with.  I think with a good demo, a Kickstarter campaign, you own website and YouTube videos following the development from early on, should put it in a fairly good place.  I feel the player base for your game should be built right from the start, way before a playable demo.  I think that's where YouTube videos come in.

    I did make and release a small game on Steam that got buried - partly because my heart wasn't in that one.  It was something small just to learn the whole process really.

    @aiaf for your games I would learn about marketing now.  Figure out what your target audience is and where they are hiding and cater adds for them.  Most people end up on Facebook at some point in the day making it one of the best places to advertise - but you have to know your target audience.  Marketing managers can figure that out with special software I think.

  14. There are lots of indie games out there and I think it all depends on how much effort you put in before release and how much you continue to put in after release.  A good idea is only part of the equation, if you really believe in your game and give it the time and money it needs it'll probably do well.

    Thanks for the guide, it answers a few of my questions.

    If you convince Steam that your game is worth marketing by doing your own marketing first, it will help you a lot.

    I wonder how one does that...
