Thirsty Panther
Blender is free but I find the interface very confusing. http://store.steampowered.com/app/365670/ I'm using 3D-Coat. Not free but I find it much easier to learn. It also has a free demo. http://store.steampowered.com/app/100980/

Brutile
I'm using 3D-Coat. Not free but I find it much easier to learn. It also has a free demo. Just keep in mind, you won't be able to sell anything made in the standard version of 3D-Coat.

Einlander
Take a look at this thread. http://www.leadwerks.com/werkspace/topic/10046-what-3d-modeling-tools-do-you-use-what-do-you-recommend/ These days I use Shade 3d. Though i don't use blender I still tell people to give it a try. Also not on The list is Sweet Home 3d. It is a opensource simple 3d architecture program. Brutile
I've had my eye on this one for a while. Might be worth checking out. It's basically the free version of zBrush http://pixologic.com/sculptris/
Slastraf
I'm using 3D-Coat. Not free but I find it much easier to learn. It also has a free demo. http://store.steampowered.com/app/100980/ But you need to pay 300 bucks if you want to go commercial. Blender is still free even for commercial Im using blender, too and its not that confusing if you learn 1 month Theres also much tutorials for Blender

Brutile
Does 3D Coat have rigging and animation? Also, what's the hard surface modeling like?
Einlander
No rigging or animation. The hard surface modeling is good, if you have the skills, which I don't. I use it mostly for painting.
cassius
I decided to learn blender by giving it one hour of my time every night. I tried to learn something new each night and I learned quite a lot.
