How to get vegetation to appear in the menu?

Just out of curiosity, what is the procedure / naming convention to get your own models to appear in the vegetation layer menu?

just add "vegetation_" at start of your model`s name.

like: "vegetation_yourmodel.gmf"

"vegetation_yourmodelLOD1.gmf"

As Omid said add "vegetation_" to the beginning of the file name.

 

Just in case FYI, for textures to show in the terrain paint layers selection, add "terrain_" at the start of your .dds files. :)

I converted a bunch of my tree models by adding vegetation_ to the beginning but I tried it with Dexsoft's Palm Pack...and it comes up in the list of available vegetation layers but it doesnt draw any vegetation. The model by itself works fine though. Any idea what may be causing this?

 

Well, after further testing - I narrowed it down somewhat. The model works fine if I individually place it...but if I place it as a vegetation layer - it becomes tiny. I could make it visible by increasing the density to 1. Any ideas why?

Argorios: Try adjusting the LOD and view range of your vegetation layer.

 

Tried it but that didnt do it...here is what I can see...

 

1. The palms in the vegetation layer are tiny - the palms I put down as models are normal size

2. The palms in the vegetation layer are not aligned to the proper axis like the models are - they are just laying flat (the models, however, are aligned normally)

:) .. does this happen only to the models you have converted?

 

hmm now where you mentioned it...that may be the case...I am converting usually from 3ds Max with the Leadwerks exporter...change the mat files..convert tga files to dds...rename to include vegetation_

 

Am I missing a step? or a setting?

sometimes there will be some strange errors, you should try other available ways, and if you got them working, you can report broken ways.

  • first try to save your texture as dds, befor exporting
  • try to exort as OBJ and use OBJ2GMF
  • try to change ArBuZ exporter options before export
  • mmm... I can't find other ways to export!

I got our artist's models to appear in the list, but I also have the same problem. When I distribute a layer, nothing is visible...I have tried playing with every possible setting I could...:D

I have not converted anything for a week or so but I use UU3D, and the previous ones I have converted seem fine .. so far.. will try a re-convert of a palm from dexsoft and then try the layers.

LOL!! your models looks better than mine! :D

 

it seems something is wrong..

I have 3 kind of trees. one of them will not paint with vegetation system, and other two will.

I'm sure thats not because of materials..

 

there should be something else.. :D

Well I reconverted the first Palm in the pack.. Using UU3D .. still no problems.

 

VScout used for scale.. the single Darker Palm with shadows is the single model instance the rest is a quick veg layer paint ... shadows off to distinguish. Simple flat unpainted terrain.

Not sure, I have tried a few more vegetation models and still can't reproduce the problem you are having but I am using UU3D.

Sorry to necro such an old thread but I have the same problem when I try to place vegetation with the editor's vegetation tool. It works fine when I place the models as a single prop, though. I'd like to try some other exporting methods but the one I currently use seems to be the only working one (blender to fbx, fbx to gmf). Any ideas?
