Steve723
I installed the trial version via PlayOnLinux version 4.2.1 and using wine 1.7.2. I run Leadwerks wine says 'Runtime error! Abnormal program termination' I click cancel and wine says 'EXCEPTION_BREAKPOINT'. Here is the POL log file: [09/16/13 01:50:31] - Running wine-1.7.2 --version (Working directory : /home/steve7233/.PlayOnLinux) wine-1.7.2 PlayOnLinux logfile ------------------- Date: 09/16/13 AggrorJorn
Well Leadwerks 3 is currently not officially supported for Linux (even though you are trying wine). You would have to wait till december when Linux is officially there. Leadwerks doesn't run on dot net. You only need OpenAL for sound but nothing else.
Steve723
I installed OpenAl for Linux but Leadwerks still doesn’t run.
Josh
You won't need to use WINE at all, soon enough. I'm building it to run natively on Linux. 1 Quote My job is to make tools you love, with the features you want, and performance you can't live without. Steve723
I know but I thought I might be able to try it using POL, wine and the windows version. Looks like I may have to use my dual boot Windows. I haven't had to use that lousy Windows **** in months and was beginning to wonder if I dared kick it off my hard drive. It looks like maybe I should keep it on there a while longer. Maybe I can use my Virtual box to run Leadwerks via a Virtual Windows, although it might be too slow to do the good stuff in games. Lol I wounder if VB can run Windows better using OpenGL instead of Direct x. Thanks for making a Linux version of Leadwerks. Maybe EA will finally consider porting Linux eventuality, though It will probably be 2015 or later before they see the light.
Steve723
I tired installing leadwerks 3 Trial via windows Vista from Virtual Box for Linux. When I ran it it displayed the splash screen then a dialog box popped up that said 'Exception_ACCESS_VIOLATION'.
Steve723
I am using my Windows Vista instead of Linux but it still won't work!! 'EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION'. shadmar
You should look in the Leadwerks.log file Editor folder. Might be an error related in there, maybe you don't have openAL installed, or your gpu isn't supported. Steve723
Actually I ¬am running windows right now so that is a windows log although it actually is a .txt file rather than a .log file. I can run lots of games on this GMA45 like Civ5, Elder scrolls: Skyrim, Uncharted Waters Online and others. Uncharted Waters Online only runs in Windows OS as in Linux OS with wine, wine can't run it due to Nprotect. I wounder if I try version 2 maybe that would work. Seems like as long as a program has a direct x 9 or lower engine, then The Intel GMA 45 can run it just fine in Windows or Linux > wine Unless wine is blocked by Nprotect or Securom or some thing. Josh
Those games are all DirectX games. Intel's support for OpenGL is pretty poor. Even when Leadwerks is released for Linux you will need a GPU to take advantage of it. Or even an AMD APU, which are like Intel integrated graphics except not terrible. Crippling OpenGL is one of the tricks MS and Intel use for vendor lock-in, whether it's intentional or just out of negligence. You can get a GPU with 100x the performance you have now for less than $100. Quote My job is to make tools you love, with the features you want, and performance you can't live without. Steve723
I will have to save up for a new computer. I think I will build my own desktop this time. I can save money since I don't need Microsoft junk. I'll install Kubutu since it can run most things now and by the time I can afford the components to build my laptop Leadwerks for Linux will be out and I will finally have a decent GPU perhaps a great NVIDIA card or something. The reson I said NVIDIA was because they seem to have the very best opence source drivers plus they said that Linux is their number one platform then comes Windows then Mac then others. Of course as a dev. you probably already know that about NVIDIA. As for Microsoft Cripling OpenGL, I am almost certain it is deliberate. Mr. Gates has said in the past that he hates Linux. I read that Linux had to start hiding its partitions from Windows because Windows is programmed to delete Linux partitions if it sees them! I know that for years Microsoft tried to Accuse wine of copyright infringement, but never could prove anything in court.
Thomas
Disclaimer: The following is purely informational. Don't take it attacking (it might seem so) or personal, that's just my style of writing. The reson I said NVIDIA was because they seem to have the very best opence source drivers They don't have a OS driver. Nouveau is not developed by NVIDIA. They don't even contribute to it in the slightest way. No, Nouveau is reverse-engineered.. NVIDIA is rather hindering its development, than contributing. That's the reason why Torvalds said (in response to NVIDIA Optimus not being supported on GNU/Linux) plus they said that Linux is their number one platform then comes Windows then Mac then others. When did they say that? And who in particular? If they'd care more about Linux than Windows, then why do we always have to wait months until they finally decide to add functionality for something to their closed-source GNU/Linux driver? (I.e. NVIDIA Optimus, took them over a year.) I read that Linux had to start hiding its partitions from Windows because Windows is programmed to delete Linux partitions if it sees them! Do you surf around in conspiracy-theory-forums? When you install a new Windows OS on your hard drive and there are partitions with a filesystem other than FAT or NTFS on it, then the installer tells you 'Unknown filesystem blablablubb' and the default is (or was) to overwrite it. Not more. Other OS installers did the same, that's nothing special. I know that for years Microsoft tried to Accuse wine of copyright infringement, but never could prove anything in court. That's certainly nothing spectacular.. {Insert random company here} is doing the same to {insert random project here}. That M$ can't stay a single bit of competition, we already knew. Steve723
I Knew that Linus didn't like NVIDIA for some reason. I just didn't know why. I thought their driver was open source. Still their better than most. Maybe they are slow to provided support for new technologies because they didn't invent them and they want to figure out how to make $'s off it first. I always unplug my Linux HD when Installing or reinstalling Windows so Windows can't see it. So if Windows can see it then it won't be a problem for me any way. I plug it back in later and reinstall GRUB.
Steve723
Is it possible to download Leadwerks 2? I was thinking since Leadwerks 3, won't run on my laptop then maybe Leadwerks 2 might.I can't find it on your web site but maybe you still have it available? AggrorJorn
That is no longer possible.
Josh
Linus was criticizing Nvidia for not programming switching between an integrated Intel graphics chip and the NVidia card, dynamically. This caused Linux laptops with NVidia cards to always use them, leading to shorter battery life. Leadwerks 2 would not have run on an old integrated graphics chip, either. For both ATI and NVidia, the proprietary drivers are far better than the open source alternatives. There is a lot of interesting things going on behind the scenes with regards to the software and hardware for Linux gaming. It's very exciting to be working together with other companies to seize our own destiny out of the jaws of Windows 8. Thomas
For both ATI and NVidia, the proprietary drivers are far better than the open source alternatives. ATI has working drivers? I heard rumours that they were to improve their Linux drivers, but who would have guessed that these are true!? And proprietary drivers might be better performance-wise, but it's closed source.. and runs as kernel module.. Running closed-source on your machine and everything it has access to is classified as compromised (as you have no idea what the hell is going on). Now loading a proprietary module into the kernel, and your whole system is compromised. Forever. There is no way you can *ever* trust it again. It's different with Windows, since there we know that the NSA is spying on us and can act accordingly. But I'm going offtopic again Quote LINUX: Viagra for the PC. running Slackware GNU/Linux since 1996 Linux Developer Windows is a 32 bit shell for a 16 bit extension to an 8 bit Operating System designed for a 4 bit microchip by a 2 bit company which can't stand one bit of competition You can protect yourself from the 12/21/12 thing by not using the US short hand date format 21/12/12 ... codeape
The latest Nvidia vs ATI performance test can usually be found here: http://www.phoronix.com/ Phoronix are very detailed and usually cover the hard ware and driver part quite well. The Mesa coverage is also good. Expect some Intel HW and drivers to pop up in the RSS. Go digging
